Ana Mendieta films at RIT City Art Space

“My art is grounded in the belief of one universal energy which runs through everything: from insect to man, from man to spectre, from spectre to plant, from plant to galaxy. My works are the irrigation veins of this universal fluid. Through them ascend the ancestral sap, the original beliefs, the primordial accumulations, the unconscious thoughts that animate the world.”
- Ana Mendieta
Hello!
I’m writing to share that there will be an opening of Ana Mendieta: Elemental at RIT City Art Space this Friday. In addition to the film works on display in the gallery, there will be a presentation by Raquel Cecilia Mendieta (Ana’s niece) about the preservation and restoration of these films, and her work with the Estate of Ana Mendieta.
As an assistant at the gallery, I was very excited to hear that we were bringing this exhibition to Rochester, and the final display of the work looks incredible in this space. Please check it out while the exhibition is open!
From the RIT City Art Space website:
Elemental is rare showing of selected films by the late pioneering artist whose work spanned photography, film, video, sculpture, performative action, earth-body works, and more; including a short documentary film Ana Mendieta: Nature Inside, narrated by Ana and directed by Raquel Cecilia Mendieta (Ana's niece).
